Overview

BMI1 proto-oncogene, polycomb ring finger pseudogene 1 (BMI1P1) is a **pseudogene** of the BMI1 proto-oncogene. BMI1P1 does not code for a functional protein, but may be transcribed as a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), sometimes called lnc-OPHN1-5. As a pseudogene, BMI1P1 itself is not considered a classic drug target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Its only role may be indirect regulation of gene expression by serving as a decoy or sponge in competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, possibly affecting the expression of its functional parent gene, BMI1, which has well-established oncogenic functions. However, there is no evidence that BMI1P1 is a validated therapeutic target or biomarker, and its molecular and functional biology is poorly characterized compared to BMI1[5].
