Overview

Body composition optimization" is not a molecular target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any specific biological molecule. Instead, it refers to the process or goal of improving the ratio of fat to non-fat components (such as muscle and bone) in the human body. This concept is widely used in health and fitness contexts to describe interventions aimed at reducing excess body fat while preserving or increasing lean muscle and bone mass. Methods for assessing body composition include dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), skinfold measurements, and hydrostatic weighing[1][2][3][4]. Optimizing body composition can reduce risks associated with obesity—such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes—and improve overall health outcomes. However, because "body composition optimization" does not refer to a discrete molecular entity but rather an "outcome measure" or clinical goal influenced by many physiological pathways (including hormonal regulation by thyroid hormones, growth hormone, steroid hormones), it should not be classified as a therapeutic target in drug discovery terms[2].
