Body fluid and electrolyte homeostasis refers to the collective physiological mechanisms that maintain the constant volume and optimal composition of body fluids—including proper concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, and other electrolytes, as well as water balance and pH—in order for organs and tissues to function properly. These homeostatic processes are executed through a complex interplay of organs (notably the kidneys, brain, and circulatory system), hormones (such as antidiuretic hormone/vasopressin, aldosterone, atrial natriuretic peptide, and angiotensin II), various ion channels and transporters, and neural feedback mechanisms. Disruption in these regulatory systems leads to clinical conditions such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and cardiovascular complications.
