Overview

The Body Protection Compound 157 (BPC-157) receptor refers to the as-yet-unidentified molecular target of the synthetic pentadecapeptide BPC-157, which is derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. While a single canonical receptor has not been definitively characterized, BPC-157 is known to exert potent regenerative and cytoprotective effects specifically on damaged tissues and repair-responsive cells, such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the nitric oxide (NO) system, the upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), and the activation of the growth hormone receptor signaling pathway. BPC-157 has demonstrated significant therapeutic potential in preclinical models for treating tendon-to-bone injuries, gastric ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease. Despite its widespread use in experimental research and regenerative medicine circles, the lack of a confirmed molecular target remains a primary challenge for its formal clinical development.
