Overview

Body self-regulation is not a single molecule or receptor but rather an overarching biological process known as homeostasis. Homeostasis refers to the ability of an organism—or more specifically its systems and organs—to maintain stable internal conditions despite changes in external environments. This involves coordinated actions among receptors that detect changes in variables such as temperature and blood sugar; control centers like the brain and endocrine system that interpret these signals; and effectors such as muscles and glands that enact responses. Examples include maintaining body temperature around 37°C through sweating and shivering; regulating blood glucose via insulin and glucagon from the pancreas; controlling water balance through kidney function and thirst mechanisms; maintaining blood pH via respiratory rate adjustments by lungs and acid excretion by kidneys. Failure of these regulatory processes can result in disease states including diabetes mellitus from impaired glucose homeostasis or hypertension from disrupted blood pressure control.
