Bombyx mori olfactory receptor 1 (BmorOR1)

Target
BmorOR1
Molecular classification
Olfactory receptor, Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

BmorOR1 is a specialized sex pheromone receptor found in the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, where it serves as the primary detector for the pheromone bombykol. It belongs to the insect odorant receptor (OR) family, which functions as heteromeric ligand-gated ion channels composed of a specific odorant-binding subunit and a highly conserved co-receptor known as Orco. BmorOR1 is predominantly expressed in the long sensilla trichodea on the antennae of male moths, enabling the high-sensitivity detection of female-released signals required to initiate courtship and mating behaviors. While BmorOR1 is not a target for human clinical therapeutics, it is a significant model in olfactory research and a potential target for reverse chemical ecology strategies in agricultural pest management. These applications aim to develop synthetic agonists or antagonists that can disrupt insect communication and reproductive cycles. Additionally, BmorOR1 has been utilized in the development of bio-electronic noses and biosensors for the sensitive detection of specific volatile organic compounds.
