Bone formation via autologous adipose-derived stem cell differentiation

Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Stem Cell Differentiation
01

Overview

Autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs or ADSCs) are multipotent mesenchymal stem cells isolated from a patient's own adipose tissue. These cells can differentiate into osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), making them a promising tool for bone regeneration and repair. The process involves harvesting ASCs, inducing their differentiation into osteoblasts, and applying them—often with scaffolds or growth factors—to sites of bone defects. ASCs offer advantages over traditional sources like bone marrow MSCs due to easier harvestability, higher yield per volume of tissue collected, lower donor site morbidity, and rapid expansion rates in culture. Being autologous reduces the risk of immune rejection.

Mechanism of action

Autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are harvested, induced to differentiate into osteoblasts in vitro, and applied to bone defect sites, often with scaffolds or growth factors, to promote bone regeneration.
