Overview

Bone marrow-derived progenitor cells are a heterogeneous group of early-lineage cells isolated from the bone marrow that possess the capacity to proliferate and differentiate into various specialized cell types, including blood, endothelial, mesenchymal, and sometimes epithelial cells. The principal subgroups include hematopoietic progenitor cells (which give rise to all blood and immune cells), mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells (which can become bone, cartilage, and fat), and endothelial progenitor cells (which contribute to blood vessel formation). These cells play essential roles in normal hematopoiesis, tissue maintenance, immune responses, and repair following tissue injury, and have been explored as therapeutic agents in bone marrow transplantation, cardiovascular repair, and wound healing. However, "bone marrow-derived progenitor cells" is not a single receptor or protein and thus does not fit the precise definition of a conventional drug target. Identification and functional assignment usually rely on surface marker combinations, but overlap with other cell types and lack of unique markers limit their specificity. Their broad biological roles and diverse subpopulations preclude direct molecular targeting but make them a subject of interest in regenerative medicine and cell therapy.
