Bone marrow tissue is the soft, spongy tissue found in the medullary cavities of bones, consisting of hematopoietic cells, adipose tissue, and supportive stromal cells[1][2][5][8]. Its principal function is hematopoiesis—the generation of all blood cell types, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—crucial for oxygen transport, immune defense, and hemostasis[4][6][8]. Bone marrow tissue also serves as a site for the generation and maintenance of immune memory cells (T and B lymphocytes) and provides a niche for stem cells critical for tissue repair[1][3]. There are two forms: red marrow, predominantly hematopoietic, and yellow marrow, primarily composed of adipocytes, with red marrow replacing yellow marrow as needed under certain physiological or pathological conditions[2][5][6][8]. Bone marrow tissue dysfunction is central in a range of diseases including blood cancers, marrow failure syndromes, and immunodeficiencies, and it plays a pivotal role in bone marrow transplantation therapy. Bone marrow tissue is a compartment rather than a single defined molecular target or receptor; drugs and therapies are usually aimed at specific components or pathological cells within the marrow, not the tissue as a whole.
