Overview

Bone mineral, also known as the inorganic bone phase, bone salt, or bone apatite, is the primary inorganic component of bone tissue. It is responsible for giving bones their compressive strength and rigidity. The main constituent of bone mineral is carbonated hydroxyapatite—a crystalline structure composed primarily of calcium and phosphate ions with some carbonate substitution—which forms a matrix interspersed among collagen fibers in the extracellular matrix of bones. Bone mineral is dynamic and plays a crucial role in calcium and phosphate homeostasis.
