The bone mineral matrix is the extracellular component of bone tissue, responsible for its strength, rigidity, and mineral storage capacity. It is a composite material consisting of organic components (primarily type I collagen and non-collagenous proteins) and inorganic components (mainly hydroxyapatite crystals). The matrix provides mechanical support, protects vital organs, serves as a mineral reservoir, and facilitates movement. Its formation and remodeling are tightly regulated by osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and disruptions in these processes can lead to various bone diseases.
Bisphosphonates: Inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Denosumab: Inhibits RANKL, reducing osteoclast formation and activity. SERMs: Estrogen agonists/antagonists that modulate bone remodeling. Teriparatide: Stimulates bone formation by promoting osteoblast activity. Calcium/Vitamin D: Provide building blocks for bone mineralization. Fluoride: Stimulates osteoblast activity, increasing bone mass (but may affect bone quality).
