Overview
Bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP10) is a member of the TGF-β superfamily and plays a critical role in cardiac development, particularly in the trabeculation of the heart during embryogenesis. It is essential for maintaining proliferative activity in embryonic cardiomyocytes. BMP10 acts as an atrial-specific biomarker regulated by PITX2 transcription factor and is a novel biomarker for cardiovascular diseases. It binds specifically to activin receptor-like kinase 1 (ALK1), mediating endothelial signaling. It may function as a tumor suppressor in cancer research, especially breast cancer.
