Overview

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is a secreted signaling molecule belonging to the bone morphogenetic protein family and TGF-β superfamily. It plays essential roles in embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis, including bone and cartilage formation, adipose regulation, and glucose/lipid metabolism. Aberrant BMP4 signaling is implicated in cancer and metabolic disorders. BMP4 signals through serine/threonine kinase receptors, activating SMAD-dependent transcriptional programs.
