Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 1A pseudogene 1 (BMPR1AP1) is classified as a processed pseudogene, specifically a retrocopy derived from the BMPR1A gene. Pseudogenes such as BMPR1AP1 structurally resemble protein-coding genes but contain mutations that prevent them from coding functional proteins. BMPR1AP1 is not reported to have established biological or disease-related functions, does not encode an active receptor protein, and no drugs are known to interact with it. While some pseudogenes can regulate their parent genes or other cellular processes at the RNA level (such as acting as RNA decoys or being processed into regulatory RNAs), no such activity has been directly attributed to BMPR1AP1. It is primarily annotated for its homology to BMPR1A and its lack of protein-coding ability[1][3][4][5][6][8].
