Overview

Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type IB (BMPR1B), also known as ALK6, is a transmembrane serine/threonine kinase that functions as a receptor for bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which are part of the TGF-beta superfamily. BMPR1B plays critical roles in embryogenesis, endochondral bone formation, and cellular differentiation. Upon BMP ligand binding, BMPR1B forms a heteromeric complex with type II BMP receptors, initiating intracellular signaling primarily via SMAD proteins. Mutations or dysregulation of BMPR1B have been associated with pulmonary hypertension and skeletal malformations.
