Overview

The bone tissue interface represents the dynamic junction between bone and an external material, such as a prosthetic implant, or an adjacent tissue (NIH, 2023). It is not a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, but a complex microenvironment where biological and mechanical interactions determine the success of surgical interventions (PubMed, 2022). This interface is the site of osseointegration, where osteoblasts deposit new bone matrix directly onto an implant surface to ensure stability (StatPearls, 2023). Signaling pathways such as RANK/RANKL and various bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are active at this site, regulating the balance between bone resorption and formation (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2021). While the interface itself is not a molecule, it is the focal point for drugs like bisphosphonates and teriparatide, which are used to enhance bone quality and prevent implant loosening (Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2020). Understanding the cellular response at this boundary is crucial for developing next-generation biomaterials and therapeutic strategies for orthopedic and dental health.
