Overview

The bone tissue microenvironment refers to the complex structural and functional local environment within bone that regulates cellular growth, differentiation, remodeling, immune interactions, vascularization, and mechanical stress responses. It is comprised of the extracellular matrix, bone cells (osteoblasts, osteoclasts, osteocytes), immune and vascular components, physical and biochemical signaling molecules, and mechanical features. Its role in bone homeostasis, disease (such as cancer metastasis and osteoporosis), and tissue engineering is increasingly recognized, but it does not represent a single molecular entity or therapeutic target. Instead, it is a highly dynamic system where various drugs and interventions may modulate its components for therapeutic purposes.
