The bone tissue mineral matrix, or bone matrix, is the intercellular substance that constitutes the majority of bone mass. It is a composite material comprised of an inorganic mineral phase (primarily hydroxyapatite) providing hardness and rigidity, and an organic phase (mainly type I collagen) providing tensile strength and flexibility. The matrix provides mechanical support, protects organs, regulates mineral homeostasis, and acts as a reservoir for calcium and phosphate. It is dynamically remodeled by osteoblasts and osteoclasts to maintain skeletal integrity and respond to mechanical demands.
Bisphosphonates: Inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption; Vitamin D: Promotes calcium absorption and bone mineralization; PTH analogs: Stimulate bone formation (intermittent administration); Denosumab: Inhibits osteoclast formation and activity.
