Overview

Bordetella avium is a Gram-negative, aerobic, motile bacterium that serves as the primary causative agent of bordetellosis, a highly contagious upper respiratory tract infection commonly known as turkey coryza (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2023). The organism is characterized by its ability to colonize the ciliated epithelium of the avian respiratory tract, leading to the destruction of the mucociliary escalator and subsequent secondary infections (Sacco et al., 2000). While Bordetella avium is a whole pathogen rather than a single molecular target, it is the focus of veterinary pharmacological interventions aimed at controlling outbreaks in poultry (Jackwood et al., 1995). Treatment strategies typically involve the administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as tetracyclines or sulfonamides, which interfere with essential bacterial processes like protein synthesis or folic acid metabolism (Register et al., 2003). In addition to antimicrobial therapy, prevention is managed through the use of live-attenuated or killed vaccines designed to elicit a protective immune response against the bacterium (Temple et al., 2010). The economic impact of B. avium is significant in the commercial turkey industry due to reduced growth rates and increased mortality when combined with other environmental stressors.
