Overview
Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative, aerobic, encapsulated coccobacillus bacterium and the causative agent of whooping cough (pertussis). It colonizes the upper respiratory tract using surface adhesins and produces several toxins, including pertussis toxin, adenylate cyclase toxin, tracheal cytotoxin and dermonecrotic toxin, that damage host tissues and induce characteristic symptoms.
