Bordetella pertussis (whole-cell) (B. pertussis)

Target
B. pertussis
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Pathogen
01

Overview

Bordetella pertussis is a Gram-negative bacterium that is the causative agent of whooping cough (pertussis). It colonizes the ciliated epithelial cells of the respiratory tract and produces various virulence factors, including pertussis toxin, adenylate cyclase toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin, pertactin, and fimbriae, which contribute to disease pathogenesis. Humans are the only known reservoir for this pathogen. Whole-cell preparations have been used in vaccines.
