Bordetella pertussis (whole organism) (B. pertussis)

Target
B. pertussis
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Pathogen
01

Overview

Bordetella pertussis is a small, Gram-negative, encapsulated coccobacillus bacterium that is the causative agent of whooping cough (pertussis), a highly contagious respiratory disease found only in humans. The bacteria attach to the cilia lining the upper respiratory tract, releasing toxins that damage these cells and cause airway inflammation. Key virulence factors include Pertussis toxin (PT), Adenylate cyclase toxin (ACT), Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), Pertactin (PRN), Fimbriae/Fimbrial agglutinogens (FIM/AGG), and Tracheal cytotoxin (TCT).
