Target intelligence / Profile preview

Bordetella pertussis Bacteria (Whole Cell) (B. pertussis (whole cell))

Target
B. pertussis (whole cell)
Molecular classification
Bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, Pathogen, Vaccine antigen
01

Overview

Whole-cell Bordetella pertussis refers to chemically or physically inactivated suspensions of the bacterium used in vaccines to prevent whooping cough. Inactivation, typically with formalin or beta-propiolactone, renders the bacteria non-infectious while retaining antigenic properties necessary to induce protective immunity. While effective, whole-cell vaccines are associated with higher rates of adverse reactions compared to acellular vaccines.
