Boron-10 isotope-containing compounds are designed for selective uptake by tumor cells. Upon neutron irradiation, the 10B atoms undergo nuclear fission, releasing high-energy alpha particles and lithium ions that cause localized cytotoxicity, primarily affecting cancer cells. Examples of these compounds are Boronophenylalanine (BPA) and Sodium borocaptate (BSH). The therapeutic effectiveness relies on achieving a high tumor-to-normal tissue boron concentration ratio and optimizing neutron beam parameters.
