Target intelligence / Profile preview

Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb)

Target
Bb
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Spirochete
01

Overview

Borrelia burgdorferi is a species of spirochete bacteria and the primary causative agent of Lyme disease in humans. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks (genus Ixodes). Infection leads to multi-stage illness if untreated, beginning with localized skin lesions progressing potentially toward systemic involvement affecting joints, heart, and the nervous system. The pathology results primarily from host immune responses rather than classical bacterial toxins.

02

Mechanism of action

Antibiotics inhibit bacterial growth by targeting essential bacterial processes such as cell wall synthesis or protein synthesis.
