Overview

Boswellia serrata extract is a standardized or crude preparation obtained from the resin of the Indian frankincense tree (Boswellia serrata), well known in Ayurvedic medicine. Its most studied constituents are boswellic acids (e.g., 3-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid, β-boswellic acid), which play key roles as anti-inflammatory agents by inhibiting leukotriene synthesis and modulating various immune pathways. Commercial preparations such as Boswellin Super (BSE) may be standardized to a specific percentage of boswellic acids. Boswellia extract is not a specific molecular target and can vary widely in composition, making precise molecular classification impossible; thus, it should not be cited as a drug target or receptor. It is most accurately referred to as a bioactive botanical mixture with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, but not as a molecular target for pharmaceuticals.
