Overview

Bothrops asper venom is a complex mixture of bioactive proteins and peptides, primarily dominated by snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs), phospholipases A2 (PLA2s), and serine proteinases [Gutiérrez et al., 2009]. These components act synergistically to induce severe clinical manifestations, including local myonecrosis, systemic hemorrhage, and coagulopathy [Warrell, 2004]. SVMPs are responsible for degrading extracellular matrix components, leading to microvascular damage, while PLA2s contribute to muscle cell membrane disruption and inflammation [Gutiérrez & Lomonte, 1995]. In therapeutic contexts, this venom is the primary target for polyvalent antivenoms, which utilize purified antibodies to neutralize toxic effects [WHO, 2016]. Emerging treatments also focus on small-molecule inhibitors, such as varespladib, which targets the enzymatic activity of PLA2s to prevent systemic toxicity [Lewin et al., 2016]. Effective management of envenomation requires rapid neutralization of these venom components to prevent permanent tissue loss or death.
