Target intelligence / Profile preview
Botrytis cinerea ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are a diverse family of transmembrane proteins that utilize the energy of ATP hydrolysis to move substrates across biological membranes. In the context of the necrotrophic plant pathogen Botrytis cinerea, these transporters are primary determinants of multidrug resistance (MDR), acting as efflux pumps that expel a wide range of synthetic fungicides and natural plant-derived antimicrobial compounds, such as phytoalexins (e.g., resveratrol). Specific members like BcatrB and BcatrD are well-characterized for their roles in protecting the fungus against phenylpyrrole and sterol demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides, respectively (Schoonbeek et al., 2001; Vermeulen et al., 2001). Beyond detoxification, these transporters contribute to fungal virulence by secreting toxins and facilitating the infection process across hundreds of plant species. Because they enable the fungus to bypass chemical control measures, these transporters are significant targets for research into chemosensitizers and novel crop protection strategies (Stefanato et al., 2009).
