Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is a highly potent neurotoxic protein produced by *Clostridium botulinum*. It functions as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that cleaves SNARE proteins essential for acetylcholine vesicle fusion with the neuronal membrane, thereby blocking neurotransmission and causing flaccid paralysis. BoNTs have various serotypes (A-G) with differing substrate specificities. While highly toxic, BoNT is also used in controlled doses for therapeutic applications, such as treating muscle overactivity and cosmetic reduction of wrinkles.
Cleaves SNARE proteins (SNAP-25, synaptobrevin, syntaxin) at presynaptic nerve terminals, preventing acetylcholine release.
