Botulinum neurotoxin C (BoNT/C) is a highly potent neuroparalytic toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. It functions as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that cleaves SNARE proteins (SNAP-25 and syntaxin-1) at presynaptic nerve terminals, blocking acetylcholine release and causing flaccid paralysis. BoNT/C is associated with animal botulism and is a potential bioterrorism agent, but is also used therapeutically for conditions involving excessive nerve activity.
