Botulinum neurotoxin D (BoNT/D) is one of the seven major serotypes (A–G) of botulinum neurotoxins produced by the bacterium *Clostridium botulinum* and related species. These toxins are among the most potent biological substances known, causing flaccid paralysis by blocking neurotransmitter release at neuromuscular junctions. It binds specifically to presynaptic membranes at cholinergic nerve terminals and cleaves SNARE proteins—specifically VAMP/synaptobrevin—disrupting synaptic vesicle fusion with the plasma membrane.
