Botulinum neurotoxin E (BoNT/E) is a highly potent neurotoxic protein produced by *Clostridium botulinum*. It functions as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that cleaves SNAP-25, a SNARE protein, thereby blocking acetylcholine release and causing flaccid paralysis. While primarily known for causing botulism, it is also being investigated for potential therapeutic applications such as anticonvulsant effects.
The light chain cleaves SNAP-25, a SNARE protein essential for acetylcholine vesicle fusion with neuronal membranes, preventing acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions, resulting in flaccid paralysis.
