Overview

Botulinum neurotoxin serotype A (BoNT/A) is a potent neurotoxic protein produced by *Clostridium botulinum*. It functions as a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that cleaves SNAP25, a SNARE protein essential for acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions. This leads to flaccid paralysis and is the basis for its therapeutic and cosmetic uses in conditions like dystonia, spasticity, migraine, hyperhidrosis, and wrinkle reduction. BoNT/A exerts its effects through a multi-step process involving binding to neuronal receptors (gangliosides and SV2), internalization, translocation of the light chain into the cytosol, and catalytic cleavage of SNAP25. In nature, it exists in complex with non-toxic proteins that enhance its oral toxicity.
