01

Overview

Botulinum neurotoxin serotype C (BoNT/C) is a highly potent neurotoxic protein produced by *Clostridium botulinum*. It is a zinc-dependent endopeptidase that cleaves SNARE proteins, specifically syntaxin-1A/1B and SNAP-25, inhibiting acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions. This results in flaccid paralysis. While primarily associated with animal botulism, it has potential therapeutic applications but is classified as a category A select agent due to its toxicity.
