Botulinum neurotoxin serotype F (BoNT/F) is a potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum and related species. It functions as a zinc-dependent metalloprotease that cleaves VAMP/synaptobrevin, a SNARE protein essential for synaptic vesicle fusion, thereby blocking acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions. This results in flaccid paralysis. BoNT/F is responsible for rare cases of human botulism and is under investigation for potential therapeutic applications in modified forms.
