Botulinum neurotoxin type E

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metalloprotease, Toxin
01

Overview

Botulinum neurotoxin type E (BoNT/E) is a potent neurotoxic protein produced by Clostridium botulinum. It inhibits acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions by cleaving SNAP-25, a SNARE protein, leading to flaccid paralysis. While primarily known for causing botulism, engineered forms are being investigated for therapeutic applications.
