Bovine bacterial surface receptors on pathogenic strains represent a broad and heterogeneous category of molecules located on the outer membrane or cell wall of bacteria that infect cattle. These molecules, which include adhesins, autotransporters, and iron-acquisition proteins (such as Transferrin-binding proteins), are critical for the bacteria's ability to adhere to host tissues, acquire essential nutrients, and evade the bovine immune system. Common pathogens associated with these targets include Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni, which are primary agents of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD). Because these receptors are exposed to the extracellular environment, they are primary targets for vaccine development and antimicrobial peptides. Therapeutic strategies often focus on blocking these receptors to prevent bacterial colonization or using them as antigens to elicit a protective mucosal or systemic immune response in the host.
