Overview

Bovine coronavirus is a member of the Betacoronavirus genus within the Coronaviridae family, classified as Betacoronavirus 1 (bovine strain), and is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. It infects both domestic and wild ruminants worldwide, causing significant veterinary disease—primarily calf enteritis, winter dysentery in adults, and contributing to the bovine respiratory disease complex. BCoV particles possess five structural proteins (spike [S], hemagglutinin-esterase [HE], envelope [E], membrane [M], nucleocapsid [N]) and several non-structural proteins. The virus enters host cells by binding to N-acetyl-9-O-acetylneuraminic acid on the cell surface, mediated mainly by the S protein, with HE contributing to attachment and receptor-destroying activity. BCoV exists as a quasispecies and can infect other animals, with historical evidence of zoonotic events. Vaccines are used in veterinary practice, but no specific antiviral drugs exist for BCoV infection. The ability of BCoV to recombine, cross species barriers, and cause both enteric and respiratory disease presents ongoing challenges for disease control and livestock health.
