Bovine parainfluenza virus 3 (BPIV-3) is a major respiratory pathogen in cattle worldwide, classified within the Paramyxoviridae family and the Respirovirus genus [1, 2]. It is a key component of the Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRDC), also known as shipping fever, where it often serves as a primary initiator of infection [4, 5]. The virus is characterized by an enveloped, non-segmented, negative-sense RNA genome that encodes structural proteins including the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) glycoproteins, which are essential for viral attachment and entry into host respiratory epithelial cells [3, 7]. BPIV-3 infection typically causes mild or subclinical respiratory signs, such as fever and cough, but its most significant impact is the localized immunosuppression and damage to the mucociliary clearance mechanism [5, 13]. This damage facilitates secondary bacterial invasions by pathogens like Mannheimia haemolytica, leading to severe pneumonia and significant economic losses in the livestock industry [1, 6]. Management of BPIV-3 primarily relies on the administration of multivalent vaccines containing modified live or inactivated viral strains to induce protective immunity [9, 11]. There are currently no specific antiviral drugs approved for clinical use against BPIV-3, making vaccination and biosecurity the cornerstones of control [8, 12].
