Target intelligence / Profile preview
Bovine pathogenic Salmonella surface receptors refer to a diverse group of proteins and structures located on the outer membrane of Salmonella species, such as Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Dublin, which are primary causes of salmonellosis in cattle. These receptors, including fimbriae (adhesins), flagella, and components of the Type III Secretion System (T3SS), are critical for the pathogen's ability to recognize, adhere to, and invade bovine intestinal epithelial cells. By facilitating the delivery of effector proteins into the host cytoplasm, these surface structures subvert host cellular processes to promote bacterial uptake and survival within macrophages. In the context of bovine health, these receptors are major targets for the development of subunit vaccines and therapeutic antibodies aimed at preventing colonization and reducing the severity of clinical disease. While traditional antibiotics target internal metabolic processes, emerging strategies focus on inhibiting these surface interactions to mitigate the spread of infection and address the growing challenge of multi-drug resistant Salmonella strains in livestock.
Antibiotics typically target bacterial cell wall synthesis, protein synthesis, or DNA replication rather than specific surface receptors; however, experimental vaccines and monoclonal antibodies target these receptors to block adhesion and invasion.
