Overview

The Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) Fusion protein is a critical surface glycoprotein and the primary target for the host immune system during infection. It belongs to the class I viral fusion proteins and is responsible for merging the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, as well as inducing the formation of multinucleated syncytia in the respiratory tract [1, 3]. BRSV is a major contributor to the Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRDC), leading to severe pneumonia and bronchiolitis in young cattle [3, 5]. Because the F protein is highly conserved and essential for infectivity, it serves as the central component in most veterinary vaccines, including modified-live and inactivated formulations [4, 6]. These vaccines aim to elicit neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses to prevent or mitigate the clinical impact of the virus [4]. While no specific small-molecule antivirals are currently approved for widespread veterinary use, the F protein remains the focus of research into novel fusion inhibitors and monoclonal antibody therapies [2, 7].
