Bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV-1), taxonomically recognized as Pestivirus A, is a significant veterinary pathogen within the Flaviviridae family. It is characterized as a small, enveloped virus containing a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome that encodes a single polyprotein, which is subsequently cleaved into structural and non-structural proteins such as NS3 and NS5B. The virus is a primary cause of economic losses in the global cattle industry, leading to symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal and respiratory distress to severe reproductive failure and the development of mucosal disease. BVDV-1 is notable for its ability to establish persistent infections (PI) when fetuses are exposed in utero, creating lifelong shedders of the virus. In pharmaceutical research, BVDV-1 is frequently utilized as a surrogate model for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) because they share similar replication strategies and conserved enzymatic targets. Therapeutic interventions focus on the development of broad-spectrum vaccines and small-molecule inhibitors targeting viral replication enzymes like the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.
