Bovine viral diarrhea virus 2 (BVDV-2), taxonomically classified as Pestivirus B, is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus in the family Flaviviridae (NCBI Taxonomy ID: 35301; [1]). It is a significant veterinary pathogen that causes a range of clinical manifestations in cattle, including respiratory disease, enteric disease, and a severe hemorrhagic syndrome characterized by thrombocytopenia and high mortality (PubMed: 15308220; [2]). The viral genome encodes a single large polyprotein that is co- and post-translationally cleaved by viral and host proteases into structural (C, Erns, E1, E2) and non-structural proteins (Npro, p7, NS2-3, NS4A, NS4B, NS5A, NS5B) (UniProt: Q96726; [3]). Therapeutic interventions and drug discovery efforts primarily target the viral enzymes essential for replication, such as the NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and the NS3 serine protease (PubMed: 22713941; [4]). Due to its close genetic relationship with the human Hepatitis C virus (HCV), BVDV-2 is frequently utilized as a surrogate model in the development of pan-flavivirus antiviral agents and polymerase inhibitors (PubMed: 15582290; [5]).
