Overview

Bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV-1), classified as Pestivirus A within the Flaviviridae family, is a small enveloped single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus approximately 40-60 nm in diameter with a 12.3 kb genome encoding structural (C, E^rms^, E1, E2) and non-structural proteins (N^pro^, NS2-NS5B).[1][2][6] It primarily infects cattle but can affect other ruminants, causing bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), an economically significant disease marked by diarrhea, fever, mucosal lesions, reproductive failure, and immunosuppression that exacerbates secondary infections.[1][2][4] BVDV-1 features at least 22 subtypes (1a-1v) and exists as non-cytopathic (ncp) strains, which establish persistent infections in fetuses leading to immunotolerant carriers that shed virus lifelong, or cytopathic (cp) strains triggering mucosal disease via NS2/3 cleavage and apoptosis.[1][2][3] Transmission occurs horizontally via secretions or vertically in utero, with persistently infected (PI) animals as key reservoirs.[2][4] Control relies on vaccination (modified-live or inactivated targeting common subtypes), biosecurity, and PI animal culling, though challenges persist from genetic recombination and subtype diversity reducing vaccine efficacy.[1][2][4] Diagnostic methods include virus isolation in MDBK cells, RT-PCR targeting 5'-UTR or NS5B, and antigen ELISAs, with real-time PCR offering high sensitivity for field surveillance.[1]
