Overview

Bovine viral diarrhea virus type 2 (BVDV-2, also known as *Pestivirus tauri*) is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus *Pestivirus* within the family *Flaviviridae*.[2][4] The virus infects cattle and causes bovine viral diarrhea, with BVDV-2 generally considered more virulent than type 1, often associated with severe acute disease including hemorrhagic manifestations.[5][6] BVDV-2 exists in cytopathic and non-cytopathic biotypes; non-cytopathic strains predominate in field infections and can establish persistent infection in immunotolerant animals.[4] The virus enters cells through E1/E2 envelope glycoprotein-mediated mechanisms, with E2 serving as a critical determinant of cellular tropism and containing major neutralizing antibody epitopes.[1] While BVDV-2 itself is not a conventional drug target, its envelope proteins (particularly E1 and E2) represent potential targets for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine development strategies for disease control and prevention.
