Overview

Intestinal function refers to the integrated physiological activities of the gastrointestinal tract, including the mechanical and chemical digestion of food, the absorption of nutrients, water, and electrolytes, and the maintenance of a selective barrier against pathogens (StatPearls, 2023). It is not a single molecular target but a complex system regulated by the enteric nervous system, endocrine signals, and the gut microbiota (NIH/NIDDK, 2017). Dysregulation of these processes is central to many clinical conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), where barrier function and immune responses are compromised, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), characterized by altered motility and visceral hypersensitivity (PubMed: 28416301). Pharmacological agents typically do not 'target' intestinal function as a whole; instead, they interact with specific molecular entities like the guanylate cyclase-C receptor (e.g., Linaclotide) or mu-opioid receptors (e.g., Loperamide) to modulate components of the overall function (PubChem). Because it represents a physiological state or therapeutic area rather than a discrete protein or receptor, it is technically considered an incorrect entry for a specific molecular target.
