Overview

Bowel tissue refers to the structural and functional tissues that make up the small and large intestines, which are key components of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The bowel is responsible for digestion, absorption of nutrients, water reabsorption, immune defense, and waste elimination. The wall of both small and large intestines is organized into four main layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria/externa, and serosa/adventitia. The intestinal epithelium consists primarily of enterocytes, goblet cells, Paneth cells, enteroendocrine cells, tuft cells, and microfold (M) cells. Bowel tissue integrity is essential for normal GI function. Disruption can lead to malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory diseases (e.g., Crohn’s disease), infections or neoplasms.
