Overview

BPI fold-containing family C protein (BPIFC) is a member of the BPI/LBP/PLUNC superfamily of lipid-binding serum glycoproteins, defined structurally by the presence of a conserved BPI fold, which consists of two domains forming a boomerang-shaped molecule with binding sites able to interact with hydrophobic ligands such as bacterial lipopolysaccharide. While closely related family members are established as components of host defense (such as bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein and PLUNC proteins), the specific biological function and disease relevance of BPIFC remain incompletely elucidated. There is no current evidence to support BPIFC as a direct therapeutic target, clinical biomarker, or molecule with established small-molecule interactions. It is primarily annotated as a protein-coding gene implicated by sequence similarity in lipid binding, potentially relevant to the innate immune response, but its role in human health or disease has yet to be clearly defined.
