Overview

The Brachial plexus is a complex somatic nerve network formed by the anterior rami of the lower cervical and first thoracic spinal nerves (C5-T1). It provides nearly all sensory and motor innervation to the upper extremity, including the shoulder, arm, and hand (StatPearls, NBK441830). From a pharmacological perspective, the brachial plexus is not a specific molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme, but rather an anatomical site where drugs are administered for regional anesthesia and pain management. Therapeutic agents, primarily local anesthetics, are injected in the vicinity of the plexus to block voltage-gated sodium channels on the nerve fibers, effectively interrupting signal transmission (PubMed, PMC4958332). Pathologies involving the brachial plexus include traumatic injuries (plexopathies), compression from tumors (e.g., Pancoast tumor), and inflammatory conditions like Parsonage-Turner syndrome (Mayo Clinic). For biotech and clinical analysts, the brachial plexus represents a critical region for localized drug delivery and a focus for regenerative therapies in the context of peripheral nerve repair.

Mechanism of action

Local anesthetics interact with voltage-gated sodium channels located on the axons within the brachial plexus to inhibit the influx of sodium ions, thereby preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses (StatPearls, NBK532888).
