Overview

Bradykinin metabolism is the process by which bradykinin, a potent vasoactive peptide, is synthesized and degraded. Bradykinin is generated from high-molecular-weight kininogen by kallikrein or plasmin. Its short half-life is due to rapid degradation by several enzymes, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), aminopeptidase P, carboxypeptidases N/M, and neprilysin. ACE is the primary enzyme responsible for bradykinin inactivation. Inhibiting bradykinin metabolism can lead to increased bradykinin levels, potentially causing adverse effects such as angioedema.
